Choosing What To Listen To
We all have moments when our thoughts seem to spiral out of control. Maybe it starts with an awkward conversation, then leads to worrying about an upcoming test, and suddenly you’re questioning your future. Before you know it, you feel completely weighed down and unsure of where to turn next. These experiences are common, even if they feel isolating in the moment.
Emotions are important to pay attention to, but they shouldn’t be the ones steering your decisions. They can show us what’s going on beneath the surface, but if they’re in charge, things can easily go off track. The good news is, you can learn how to respond to your feelings rather than just react.
In Psalm 42, the writer is honest about his struggle. He feels deeply unsettled and discouraged. But notice how he responds. He talks directly to his soul, asking, “Why are you so downcast?” Instead of letting sorrow take over, he intentionally encourages himself to put hope in God.
He doesn’t pretend everything is fine or brush his feelings aside. Instead, he recognizes the pain and responds with truth. This practice is at the heart of emotional resilience: acknowledging tough emotions while also remembering that God is present, even in the mess. Joy doesn’t mean you never feel sad or anxious; it means you trust God’s presence to carry you through those moments. When your emotions start to drag you down, remind yourself of the hope you have in God.
Application:
Take a moment to write a “Hope Declaration” for today. Use your journal or your phone. It could be something like, “Even though I feel [emotion], I choose to put my hope in God because He is [truth about God].” Say it out loud a few times. It might feel awkward at first, but sometimes your mind needs to hear your own words speaking truth.
