Anxiety vs. The Peace Treaty
Anxiety can feel relentless, always pressing for your attention, whether it’s about classes, friendships, or uncertainty about what’s next. It can steal our sense of joy and make it seem like we need to have everything under control or else things will fall apart.
In Philippians 4, Paul writes from a prison cell, a situation that would cause anyone a lot of stress, and he says, “Do not be anxious about anything.” At first, that can sound unrealistic. It’s not easy to just stop worrying. But Paul doesn’t leave us there; he actually explains what to do instead. He invites us to bring our worries to God through prayer and thanksgiving. It’s a real exchange: you hand over your anxieties to God and choose gratitude, even in hard times. Gratitude can ground you, reminding you that good things still exist, even if life feels overwhelming.
When you do this, God promises a peace that goes way beyond understanding. It doesn't always make logical sense to feel calm when everything around you is chaotic, but that’s the peace God gives. It's a peace that stands guard over your heart and protects your joy, even in tough moments.
Application:
Take a moment to reflect. Open the notes app on your phone. Write down three things you’re truly grateful for right now (it could be something big or small, like a friend’s support, a meal, or an accomplishment). Then, think about the main thing worrying you. Offer a simple prayer: “God, thank you for [your list]. I’m giving you [your stress]. Please fill me with your peace.”
