DAY 8 OF 20

Iron Sharpens Iron

Consider the difference between a dull knife and a sharp one. Trying to cut something with a blade that hasn’t been maintained is difficult and frustrating; nothing seems to work as it should. But a sharp knife, one that’s been properly cared for and refined, is much more effective. The sharpening process takes effort, requires friction, and isn’t always pleasant.

Proverbs 27:17 tells us, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Sharpening, whether we’re talking about knives or people, takes intentionality. It means sometimes there’s disagreement or challenge. It can be uncomfortable, but it’s necessary for growth.

Meaningful relationships don’t develop when everyone is always agreeable or looks the other way when things get tough. The friendships that truly matter are the ones that help you grow, even if that means calling you out when you’re not at your best or encouraging you to persevere when you feel like quitting. These people remind you who you are, especially when you lose sight of it yourself.

Growth is something that happens in community. We need others who care enough to encourage us, but also to be honest with us, even when it’s hard. Those relationships may feel uncomfortable at times, but they create a strength and clarity you won’t find alone. Joy in these moments is about more than comfort; it’s about being shaped into the person God calls you to be, with people who truly have your best in mind.

Application:
Think about someone in your life who encourages your growth—maybe a friend who’s honest with you, a leader who challenges you, or a mentor who listens and gives wise advice. Take a moment to reach out, send a text or DM that simply says, "Thanks for helping me become a better person."
