Exodus: Chapter by ChapterSample

Corrected by Love, Shaped by Grace
There’s a moment every child experiences as they grow up, a moment that feels confusing at first. When they’re babies, their needs are met almost instantly. Comfort comes quickly. But then one day, correction enters the picture. It can stun them. Why is this happening? Has our relationship changed? It takes time for a child to understand that correction isn’t rejection, it’s love. Loving parents don’t correct to harm, but to shape. Correction is constructive, and when understood rightly, it’s actually a blessing.
That same truth is woven into God’s relationship with His people.
At Mount Sinai, God reveals His holiness and invites Israel into a covenant relationship. The law He gives isn’t a withdrawal of grace, it’s an expression of it. God didn’t rescue Israel because they obeyed; He gave the law after He redeemed them. The commands were never meant to earn salvation, but to form a people who reflected His heart.
God’s instructions reveal His desire for justice, compassion, and obedience rooted in relationship. Just like a loving parent, God sets boundaries not to control His children, but to protect and guide them. Obedience, in this context, isn’t about fear; it’s about trust. It flows best from gratitude for what God has already done.
When we remember God’s grace, how He rescued us, forgave us, and called us His own, obedience becomes a response of love, not obligation. We follow Him not to keep His favor, but because we already have it.
Respond to God’s Word:
- How does remembering God’s grace motivate your obedience?
