Day 9: Clothe Yourself
Scripture: Colossians 3:12–14 (NIV)
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Paul uses the image of getting dressed. You choose what to put on before you walk out the door. He’s saying you can choose what to wear emotionally and spiritually, too, especially at home, where it’s hardest.
Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. These aren’t personality traits you either have or you don’t. They’re choices you make. And Paul says you put them on, which means there’s a version of you that shows up without them. We all know what that looks like at home.
The snapping at your sibling. The silent treatment with your parent. The door slam. The sarcasm that cuts deeper than you meant it to. That’s you showing up unclothed, spiritually speaking. Reacting instead of choosing.
Then Paul adds forgiveness. And he raises the bar: “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” That’s not small forgiveness. That’s lavish, undeserved, first-move forgiveness. The kind that doesn’t wait for an apology.
Family will test every one of these qualities. That’s not a bug in the design. It’s the point. Home is where your faith gets practiced in real time, with real people, in real conflict. And every time you choose compassion over contempt, you’re reflecting the heart of Jesus.
Reflect: Which of these qualities do you need most in your family right now: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, or patience?
Today: Pick one word from that list. Make it your word for the week. Before every interaction at home, remind yourself: this is what I’m putting on today.
