DAY 9 OF 20

Day 9: The Cost of Holding Back

Scripture: Psalm 34:1–3 (NIV)
"I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together."

David wrote this psalm after a genuinely humiliating situation. He had faked insanity to escape from an enemy king. Not his finest moment. And yet his response was: I will praise God at all times. Not just when things are going well. Not just when I look good. Always.

There's something about unashamed praise that's contagious. David says "let the afflicted hear and rejoice." When you're open about your joy in God, it gives other people permission to have theirs. When you hold back, you're not just protecting yourself. You're potentially keeping someone else from seeing something they need to see.

The person in your school who's struggling and doesn't know where to turn might not need a sermon. They might just need to see someone who has something real. Someone whose joy isn't dependent on everything going right. Someone who praises God even when things are hard.

That's what holding back costs. Not just your own freedom, but the possibility that your unashamed joy could be the thing that opens a door for someone else.

You don't have to be loud about it. You don't have to perform. You just have to be real. And real joy, the kind that's rooted in something bigger than your circumstances, is visible even when you're not trying to make it visible.

Reflect: Who in your life might need to see your genuine faith right now? What's stopping you from letting them?

Today: Let one person see something real about your faith today. Not a speech. Just authenticity. Let your joy be visible to someone who might need it.
