Has someone ever made a lofty promise to you? The promise you desperately wanted them to keep, but you felt was impossible for them to actually do? That’s probably the kind of promise Jacob thought this was. On the run from the wrath and jealousy of his brother Esau, Jacob was utterly and totally alone. If he needed anything in that moment beyond the assurance of safety, it was the promise that he wasn’t alone. So when God appeared to him in a dream and promised to be with him no matter where he went, Jacob probably thought it was too good to be true. But this is God we’re talking about here! And that means this is the kind of promise that was not only for Jacob, but one we can count on as well. It’s the kind of promise we know is true now and will be true forever. Why? Because it comes from the only One whose word will never fail. When God promises to be with us always, we can rest assured that His promise will be kept.
This week, work to memorize this verse. The next time you feel alone, return to this promise and let it remind you that God is with you always.

About this Plan

As humans, we all wonder what God is really like? Is God kind, loving, powerful, attentive, loyal? Is God distant, unfair, harsh, judgmental, or absent? In other words, we’re asking: what can we be sure is always true about who God is? In this devotional, we’ll look to Scripture to explore those questions and ground the answers in unshakeable, unchangeable truth, uncovering more about who God is and why we can trust Him not just now, but always.
